Finding the Right Rug Size
Living Rooms
Choose a rug large enough to sit beneath the front legs of your sofa and chairs, with approximately 6 to 8 inches extending beyond the sides of the furniture. For a smaller arrangement, keep all furniture legs off the rug and leave an even border around it.
Dining Rooms
Select a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond every side of the dining table. This provides enough room for all four legs of each chair to remain on the rug when the chairs are pulled out.
Bedrooms
For a balanced look, choose a rug that extends approximately 18 to 24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed. You can also place smaller rugs or runners along each side for a soft landing without covering the entire floor.
High-Traffic Areas
For hallways and entryways, choose a runner that leaves approximately 4 to 6 inches of visible flooring along each side. A properly sized rug helps protect the flooring underneath from scratches, scuffs, dirt, and premature wear caused by frequent foot traffic.
